AvB - Pattern - Place

Race 1 Carlisle 13:35 Novices Hurdle (Class 4) 17f

645 Dunnet Head
Well backed and looked a nice prospect when making winning debut in a bumper at Ayr in October and wasn't beaten far when fourth of 10 in novice hurdle at Kelso (16.2f, soft, evens) on hurdles bow 64 days ago. High on the shortlist.
11-5Craig NicholIain Jardinelocked2/12.5/125
3810 Sleeping Satellite
Cost £85,000 after winning his sole start in Irish points in February and justified support switched to a bumper at Catterick in November. Shaped better than the result when sixth on hurdles bow at Haydock 38 days ago, tiring only late, and he's a likely improver.
11-5Brian HughesDonald McCainlocked3/12/133
762 Yukon
Fair maiden handicapper on Flat for David O'Meara made light of a 14-month absence to make a winning yard/hurdles debut at Sedgefield in October. Ran to similar level when third there last time and should be in the mix.
11-12Charlotte JonesJames Moffattlocked4.5/15.5/122
401 Bertie's Wish
Fair Flat winner who comfortably got off the mark at just the second time of asking in this sphere in 8-runner maiden at Sedgefield in December. Struggled under a penalty in a better race last time but should be capable of making his presence felt here.
11-12Sean QuinlanJennie Candlishlocked5/14.5/110
638 Rhodia
Runner-up twice from 4 starts in bumpers, including on second start for this yard at Bangor in September. Ran to only a modest level when third of 5 in novice hurdle at Musselburgh (15.6f, soft, 16/1) on hurdles bow 63 days ago and others are preferred.
11-5Chris WardSarah Hollinsheadlocked7/120/1186
424 Coniston Clouds
Should ability when runner-up in a bumper here last term. Only mid-field in a pair of novice hurdles so far this season and is perhaps one for handicaps down the line.
11-5Danny McMenaminNicky Richardslocked12/110/117
223 Breeze Of Wind
Off mark in Irish points at the sixth attempt and was well held in novice hurdle ((16.2f, heavy) on Rules debut at Kelso last month.
11-5Ross ChapmanBarry Murtaghlocked33/1100/1203
226 Ebendi
Fairly useful Flat performer for Joseph O'Brien but was sold worryingly cheaply from that yard and showed little zip on yard/hurdles debut at Kelso last month. Hard to fancy.
11-5Conor O'FarrellAndrew Wilsonlocked40/150/125
647 Lincoln Burrows
12,000 gns 5-y-o, Dylan Thomas gelding. Half-brother to useful hurdler/chaser Born By The Sea and modest hurdler Robindevidastar. Maiden Irish pointer doesn't appeal as a winner on Rules debut.
11-5Henry BrookeMicky Hammondlocked40/140/10
309 Road To Rosley
Placed on second start in bumpers last term but has been well held over hurdles this time and will be better off in low-grade handicaps, Tongue strap on for 1st time.
11-5Mr John DixonJohn Dixonlocked100/140/160
2211 Halfway House Lad
Unseated rider on debut and failed to beat a rival at Kelso last time, so there's nothing to recommend about his showings so far.
10-7Stephen MulqueenMaurice Barneslocked100/1300/1200
There are 11 runners in this race.

AvB - Pattern - Place

Race 2 Carlisle 14:10 Handicap Chase (Class 3) 16f

351 Escapeandevade
Point winner who built on a pormising chase debut third when scoring easily in a small-field handicap at Ayr (2m, heavy) last month. A 7 lb rise doesn't look enough to stop him with further improvement on the cards.
11-10Brian HughesJames Ewartlocked1.25/11.25/10
244 One Fine Man
Landed 2¾m Cartmel maiden hurdle in May 2021. Very lightly raced since but he returned from another 14 months off to go close on his 21f Sedgefield chase debut 24 days ago. Open to improvement but this much shorter trip asks a difference question.
10-11Charlotte JonesJames Moffattlocked3.33/12.75/117
393 Captain Quint
Scored on chase debut at Hexham (2m) in November. Creditable third at Ayr (20.5f) and Kelso (2¾m) on his 2 completed starts since. Drops back in trip now.
11-1Craig NicholRose Dobbinlocked4/13.33/117
322 Word Has It
Dual hurdle winner who returned to finish a creditable third in 2m handicap hurdles at Wetherby and Ffos Las in recent months. Fell early on chase debut last winter. Stable has good record in this race but Brian Hughes has seemingly been let off to partner Escapeandevade.
11-6Theo GillardDonald McCainlocked5/17/140
There are 4 runners in this race.

AvB - Pattern - Place

Race 3 Carlisle 14:45 Novices/Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) 19f

63 Poetic Music
Fairly useful in bumpers last season and made perfect start over hurdles at Ludlow in November. Cracking efforts in defeat since and while this trip isn't certain to suit, she's still very much the one to beat.
11-9Paddy BrennanFergal O'Brienlocked0.5/10.5/10
482 Ebonello
Won Sedgefield bumper on return before a making successful transition to hurdling in 10-runner novice at Wincanton. However, she came unstuck at Plumpton last time and again looks vulnerable under her penalty.
11-9Gavin SheehanJamie Snowdenlocked4/15/125
401 Bents Hollow
Successful on second of 2 starts between the flags in Ireland and readily landed the odds on Rules debut in a 3-runner novice hurdle at Musselburgh (15.6f, soft) in November. Better form in defeat under a penalty at Catterick but more is needed here against Poetic Music.
11-9Brian HughesDonald McCainlocked5.5/13.33/139
1007 Torosay
Getaway filly. Dam (h88), winning pointer/placed over hurdles, half-sister to fairly useful chaser (stays 3¼m) Up Helly Aa King. Shaped like a stayer in her bumper and now up in trip for hurdles debut.
11-2Derek FoxLucinda Russelllocked11/128/1155
3195 Flora Paget
Well held in bumpers last season.
11-2Chris WardSarah Hollinsheadlocked66/1125/189

AvB - Pattern - Place

Race 4 Carlisle 15:15 Handicap Chase (Class 3) 21f

392 Maid O'Malley
Form figures here over hurdles/fences read 2212, which includes a clear-cut success in this race 12 months ago. Ran about as well as could've been expected when second to Zambella in a C&D listed event on return and, though below par next time, she's a big player back in handicap company.
11-11Sam ColtherdStuart Coltherdlocked2/11.75/113
114 La Renommee
Yet to score for current yard and she failed to make an impact in handicap hurdles on her first 2 starts of this campaign. However, took a step firmly back in the right direction when runner-up on recent chase debut at Wetherby (19.4f, soft) and every chance here if able to build on that.
10-8Charlie HammondDr Richard Newlandlocked2/12.25/113
473 Lilith
Ended last term on a high, landing mares' handicap chases at Newbury (2½m) and Punchestown (21f). Hasn't fired on all cylinders in 2 starts so far this season but a return to form would certainly see her competitive in this contest.
11-4Rex DingleAnthony Honeyballlocked3/14/133
351 Haute Estime
Listed hurdles winner against her own sex last winter and signed off for the season with a mighty third in the Sefton at Aintree (looked well suited by 3m). However, she was well beaten on second chase start at Cheltenham in November and again struggled back over hurdles last time.
12-0Derek FoxLucinda Russelllocked4.5/14.5/10
There are 4 runners in this race.

AvB - Pattern - Place

Race 5 Carlisle 15:45 Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) 17f

424 Malpas
Landed 3 C&D wins last season. Proved a disappointment sent chasing on his Hexham reappearance in November but bounced back with placed efforts in handicap hurdles over C&D and at Market Rasen to end 2022. Likely to be very competitive.
11-11Brian HughesDonald McCainlocked5.5/15.5/10
271 Clear White Light
Hexham winner for Sandy Forster in April and struck again for new stable in 13-runner Doncaster handicap (19.5f) last month. Lightly-raced type who could have more to offer and a good chunk of his 7 lb rise is offset by Jack Hogan's claim.
12-0Jack HoganAdrian Paul locked6/11.75/171
417 Lively Citizen
Likeable and consistent through most of his career but hasn't fired in 3 outings this season. Is back on a good mark if first-time cheekpieces give him a lift, though.
11-9Kielan WoodsD J Jeffreyslocked6.5/13.33/149
412 Quick Sharpener
Point winner who built on the encouragement of his hurdle debut at the second attempt when winning a novice at Wetherby (2m, soft) over Christmas. Unexposed now moving into handicap company.
11-12Charlie HammondDr Richard Newlandlocked8/17.5/16
7113 Applaus
Gained a second C&D success (2 years apart) when edging out Malpas (Wor Verge back in fourth) in November. Hardly has the profile of one likely to follow up but his decent course record (also second in this race 12 months ago) provides hope.
11-1Emma Smith-ChastonMicky Hammondlocked8.5/111/129
3514 Serious Ego
Last success came over 2 years ago and his latest Ayr run was disappointing. On a career-low mark but others certainly arrive with more pressing claims.
10-7Sean QuinlanNicky Richardslocked12/116/133
226 Wor Verge
Landed back-to-back C&D handicaps in the autumn but has found it tougher from higher in the weights both starts since, finishing a well-beaten third of 7 at Kelso 22 days ago.
11-9Nathan MoscropSusan Corbettlocked12/118/150
348 Minella Youngy
Fair winning hurdler in Ireland for Gavin Cromwell but last of 5 on Musselburgh stable debut 5 weeks ago. Dropped 2 lb for that but it doesn't look enough.
11-9Craig NicholIain Jardinelocked12/133/1175
3910 Fostered Phil
Landed a Newcastle maiden in November 2020 and shaped as if retaining all ability after 2 years off when second on handicap debut at Musselburgh (2m, soft) in November. Respectable third at Doncaster (2m again) since. Can playu a part.
11-6Danny McMenaminJames Ewartlocked16/19/144
1633 Vocal Duke
Successful 3 times last season for Toby Lawes and also successful at Cartmel for new yard in June. Off since unseating there at the end of August. Possibly best watched this time.
11-12Charlotte JonesJames Moffattlocked20/120/10
5712 City Derby
Won at Southwell last spring. Placed in Plumpton seller and Southwell handicap to end 2022. Has a first run for a new yard here after leaving Fergal O'Brien.
11-3Thomas DowsonLizzie Quinlanlocked25/133/132
775 Cenotice
Won 3 times following a lengthy absence last season but has been a well-beaten fourth on both outings this term. Now back hyurdling after 11 weeks off. Malpas the more obvious of the yard's pair.
11-11Theo GillardDonald McCainlocked33/180/1142
609 Dakota Moirette
Punchestown maiden hurdle success for Gordon Elliott back in December 2016 remains his sole victory from 38 starts under Rules and offered little on his completed start over fences this winter. First hurdle start since 2018.
11-7John KingtonAndrew Crooklocked66/1100/152
There are 13 runners in this race.

Race 6 Carlisle 16:15 Handicap Chase (Class 5) 24f

3710 Patient Owner
Yet to win a race of any description but he has relatively low mileage and chase debut second at Uttoxeter (3m, heavy) represented a step forward. That form looks solid (third and fourth have both win since) and a bold show is on the cards.
11-3David NoonanHenry Oliverlocked2.25/11.75/122
2213 To The Limit
Perhaps forutnate to have won 4-runner handicap chase at Kelso (23.4f, heavy) last month, getting up late after becoming outpaced. Hadn't been in much form prior to that victory and he'll need to up his game to follow up here.
10-2Sean QuinlanStuart Coltherdlocked6/17/117
214 Chris Cool
Made a successful debut over hurdles at Bangor in 2021 and best effort since when fourth in a 10-runner Hereford handicap (21.7f, heavy) 3 weeks ago. Worth a second look off 2 lb lower now upped in trip for this chase debut.
11-13Henry BrookeOliver Greenall & locked7.5/15.5/127
429 Aire Valley Lad
Belatedly opened chase account at the twelfth time of asking at Wetherby in December. Took little interest back at that venue 3 weeks later, adding to what is a rather patchy profile, and clearly isn't one for maximum faith.
11-7Ross ChapmanSue Smithlocked10/16/140
421 Another Emotion
Dual chase winner (at around 3m) in early-2021. Best effort last season when second at Hereford in February but hard to draw many positives from his 4 subsequent outings (pulled up the last twice). Risky.
12-2Brian HughesWarren Greatrexlocked11/125/1127
1092 Speak Of The Devil
Runner-up here and at Doncaster off higher marks last season but he has offered little on his last 3 starts, including on return here in October. Needs to bounce back in a major way following a wind op.
12-0Stephen MulqueenLucinda Russelllocked11/128/1155
343 Fix At All
Winning hurdler/chaser in France but record for current yard is disappointing and hopes pinned on this step up in trip helping to spark a revival.
11-13Luca MorganMichael Scudamorelocked11/118/164
3011 Kalaharry
Has slipped to an attractive mark, now 23 lb below that off which he gained sole chase success to date at Hexham in May 2021. Little impact so far this season but interesting to see if the addition of cheekpieces help spark a return to form.
11-0Craig NicholEwan Whillanslocked12/133/1175
116 Dawn Raider
Successful here and Leicester last term and bettered low-key reappearance when fifth of 10 at Wetherby (24.2f, soft) recently. Down another 3 lb and not without hope now eased in class.
11-12Kevin BroganGary Hanmerlocked16/112/125
427 Trevelyn's Corn
Expensive point recruit who went the wrong way for Paul Nicholls after winning a maiden hurdle at Wincanton in March 2019. Runner-up twice in this sphere last spring, including here, but not in the same form since returning to action in December.
11-11Emma Smith-ChastonMicky Hammondlocked18/110/144
428 Who's In The Box
Winless since 2020 and there were no signs of a revival when down the field in a first-time visor (discarded here) at Market Rasen last time. Cheekpieces refitted.
11-9Lewis StonesNick Kentlocked18/114/122
2214 Espoir Moriviere
Twice a winner over hurdles and solid efforts in this sphere prior to misfiring the last twice, latterly last of 4 in the Kelso handicap chase won by To The Limit. 5 lb 'wrong' at the weights.
10-2Dylan JohnstonRose Dobbinlocked25/125/10
2412 Cudgel
All 4 wins gained at Hexham, most recently over fences last March. Would have a serious chance off this mark if on-song but has a fair bit to prove having performed poorly on both appearances this season.
10-4Conor O'FarrellJames Waltonlocked33/125/124
395 Along Long Story
Winner of Thurles maiden hunter last spring but no real impact both subsequent starts for Sean Aherne, and his reappearance effort at Kelso for new connections was anything but inspiring.
11-12Miss Becky SmithMicky Hammondlocked40/1125/1213
There are 14 runners in this race.

£20,000 4-y-o, Getaway gelding. Closely related to fair hurdler It Takes Time, and half-brother to fairly useful hurdler/useful chaser Get Out The Gate. Runner-up on second of 2 starts in Irish points ans justified strong support in 7-runner bumper at Sedgefield in December.
12-0Charlotte JonesJames Moffattlocked2/14.5/1125
1042 Bullets Hill
Imposing sort who looked a strong stayer when making a winning debut for new yard at Chepstow in October. Likely has more to offer so a leading candidate.
12-0Nick ScholfieldElla Pickardlocked3/13.5/117
3171 Bertie's Ballet
Belied odds of 16/1 when making a successful start at Newcastle in March. Turned out a week later and matched that effort when third under a penalty at Kelso. Off since but he should be competitive.
12-0Conor O'FarrellDianne Sayerlocked4/18/1100
06 Moonlit Park
Walk In The Park mare. Closely related to a winner, and half-sister to 4 winners, including fairly useful hurdler/useful chaser Danny Whizzbang. Trainer’s newcomers command respect and this one has plenty to recommend her on paper.
